About Jillian Goldberg
Jillian Goldberg grew up in the small fishing town of Hermanus, on the West coast of South Africa. She attended the Michaelis School of Art at the University of Cape Town, graduating with a BA in Art Education. Jillian taught art at all levels both in South Africa and in the US, where she emigrated with her family in 1982. She opened seven art schools for children in the Charlotte NC and Triangle areas, under license to Mona Brooks, author of "Drawing with Children." She founded the Gifted and Talented Development Center at Queens University in Charlotte, North Carolina. The program grew over twenty years to accommodate thousands of children, K through High School, in both day and residential summer camps. After retiring in 2005, Jillian returned to her first love, painting and collage, participating in many workshops with nationally renowned instructors, volunteering in local arts organizations and teaching art to adults. She shows in local and regional juried shows both in groups and as a solo artist. Her work is in collections in Israel, South Africa, Holland, the US.
Jillian believes that art is a language like any other: like the aural elements in music, the visual elements that make up a painting or sculpture can communicate much to the viewer. Art can tell a story, create a feeling, inspire and intrigue, but essentially fine art must be authentic. While there is nothing new under the sun, and all artists draw inspiration from other images and techniques that have gone before, the artist must strive to be true to his or her own unique spirit. The qualities in any work of art that inspires us, reflect our human need for beauty and harmony. In 1819 the great English poet John Keats said,in his Ode to a Grecian Urn :
" "Beauty is truth, and truth beauty"
that is all ye know on earth and all ye need to know."
